The Indian summer community is fortunate to have a 33-acre, undeveloped, forested parcel containing a large seasonal pond. Homeowners had the vision over 20 years ago to create a walking trail through this tract for the enjoyment of the residents. This trail is about 2/3 of a mile long and has one side branch
The trail that winds through the Nature Preserve is maintained by the Indian Summer HOA Nature Preserve Committee for the benefit of the residents and their guests.
All the signs and interpretive information that is posted on the bulletin board at the southern entrance off Prestwick Ln is produced by this group.
The trail itself requires periodic maintenance, particularly after major storms. Bird boxes and other wildlife observation reports are the responsibility of this committee
The Nature Preserve Committee’s primary job is to maintain the trail in usable condition year-round. In addition, we provide information on rules for use of the preserve, interpretive materials about the flora and fauna in our area on the two bulletin boards at the trail ends, signage along the trail for direction and plant identification, and also, maintain 7 duck nest boxes at the margins of the pond

What We Don’t Do
- Animal Control. We don’t attempt to control the presence or behavior of any wild animals such as coyotes, raccoons, opossums, deer, bear, etc., nor do we act as animal control in any other part of the development. If you have animal control concerns, contact Thurston County.
- Trash Pickup. We don’t have any trash receptacles in the Preserve. Please take all of your trash with you and dispose of it at home.
- Guarantee Your Safety. The Nature Preserve is thought to be a relatively safe place but you may encounter an uneven walking surface, stinging and biting insects, irritating or poisonous plants and fungi, and a variety of wildlife. We can’t control potential risks from any of these and encourage users to take reasonable precautions such as; wearing appropriate footwear, staying on the trail, paying attention to where you are putting your feet, using insect repellent when appropriate, not touching or eating plants, fungi, or berries that you don’t know the identity of, staying clear of wild animals that don’t run from you, and taking your cell phone with you. The trail is intended for walking foot traffic only. It is not meant for running or any kind of wheeled device. Minor children should never be in the Preserve without a legally responsible adult.
